What is Depression?
When you are going through those times when everything is gloomy, you have low energy, you don’t want to talk to anyone, or even leave the house, with sadness, crying for no apparent reason, or not eating much or overeating, it could mean you are suffering with depression. Depression, as other psychological disorders, happens in a continuum. You could be suffering from mild depression or from deep depression that could even be causing psychotic symptoms.
Signs and symptoms of Depression
Depression presents itself in many different ways:
- Depression changes the way you feel: joyless, miserable, suffering, in pain, despaired, sad, “down”, desperate, self-destructive, or suicidal
- Depression changes the way you behave: your sleep and eating patterns changes, you feel sluggish, tired, or you talk less
- Depression changes the way you think: feeling lost, depleted, helpless, hopeless, pessimistic, bored, having difficulties concentrating, focusing, with no plans for self, no future, feeling empty, confused, inadequate, worried, frustrated, ruminating things from the past, or being self-critical (sorry, regretful, ashamed, overwhelmed, bitter, or vulnerable)
- Depression changes the way you socialize: reclusive, isolated, avoiding people or crowds, argumentative, irritable, demanding, crabby, unassertive, suspicious, shy, or separating from life/others
- Depression changes the way your body feels: you have little, if any, interest in sex, increased urination, diarrhea/constipation, moving slower, low self-care, overuse of prescription and over-the counter medications (analgesics, sleeping pills, laxatives, vitamins), alcohol, caffeine, or stimulant drugs.
Causes of Depression
Feeling depressed is something that us humans go through every now and then. Some feeling of sadness usually goes away after 4 to 6 months. But, at times, depression stays for long time, and/or is very intense. Depression could be hereditary (genetic), or caused by life situations, or by medical or other psychological issues.
How I treat Depression
I often use an integrative approach to treat depression. I use techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as psychotherapy, Mindfulness, ACT, EFT, and other types of therapy I’ve trained on and maybe useful to the treatment.

After completing treatment, patients can expect recovering from depression and not have to take any more medications, returning to the optimal level of wellbeing.

Since there are many different levels of depression, it is expected that the duration of treatment depends of the level of depression. It could be resolved in months or in a couple of years.
Yes. Life happens. And with that, there may be situations that will trigger the depression back. Understanding where the depression is coming from and how to get treated as soon as you see a sign of depression comes back, will help diminish levels of reoccurrences.
Depending on the cases, I might recommend patients to see a psychiatrist and start on medication. Research says that the best treatment for depression is the combination of psychotherapy and medication.
Depression can also be treated without medication.
